Sorry I haven’t been blogging so much recently.  Among other things I’ve been busy preparing for this.  The Christian Union have done a terrific job preparing and publicizing.  Please pray that the word of Christ would go out with power!

I’ve got a crazy busy week – seven talks in the next six days.  And on Thursday I’m helping a friend in court against an unscrupulous landlord – please pray for that, we’re way out of our depth!

But here’s what’s been going through my head all day…

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying “Lord I just don’t care”
But you’ve got the love I need To see me through

Sometimes it seems that the going is just too rough
And things go wrong no matter what I do
Now and then it seems that life is just too much
But you’ve got the love I need to see me through

When food is gone you are my daily meal
When friends are gone I know my Saviour’s love is real
Your love is real

You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love

Time after time I think “Oh Lord what’s the use?”
Time after time I think it’s just no good
Sooner or later in life, the things you love you loose
But you got the love I need to see me through

You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love
You got the love

Sometimes I feel like throwing my hands up in the air
I know I can count on you
Sometimes I feel like saying “Lord I just don’t care”
But you’ve got the love I need to see me through

More than 160 were arrested the first week Shouwang tried to meet outdoors, about 50 were arrested the second week, approximately 40 on the third week, about 30 on the fourth week, 13 the fifth week, 20 the sixth week and 25 the seventh week.

Last week 22 were arrested.  Pray, especially as they seek to meet again tomorrow.

UPDATE: Josh VB asks us to pray in particular for a girl called Tingting. She’s been going to the outdoor meetings week by week. She’s now under house arrest every day and so unable to get to work.

And keep praying for unity in the churches.

In the wake of Nigerian presidential elections in which a Christian from the south has won, the north has erupted in violence. Open Doors reports that 60 churches have been torched and thousands of Christian homes destroyed.

My brother in Christ Yahaya Ibrahim is a brave pastor of a congregation in Kaduna. He contacted me to ask for prayer:

Please pray for:

* God’s intervention,
* Pray against fear,
* Pray against retaliation,
* Pray against rumour mongering.

From Josh’s blog.  Please spread the word to get people praying:

About 18 months ago ShouWang (a large “Family Church” in Beijing, English name: The Rock) bought a building to meet in, but the Government put pressure on the property manager to not hand over the keys so they were forced to rent a place instead. The Government then put pressure on the landlord to evict them which he did a couple of weeks ago. The therefore felt they had no alternative but to meet outside, which they did last Sunday (10th April).

Consequently over 100 people (including our friend MM) were taken away by police for questioning, with most being (including MM) released 24 hours later having signed a statement saying they won’t take part in any other illegal meetings.

This Sunday (17th April) since they want to keep meeting as a church, and have no alternative, they will meet outside again. Today, the police have personally visited a number of the congregation (including our friends Carol and DQ) warning them not to take part in the service.

We’ve just been on the phone to Carol, she’s not sure what she should do: whether to honour her dad by staying at home and away from a likely conflict with the police, or go and identify herself with fellow believers and obeying the command to keep on meeting with brothers and sisters. We’re not sure what to advise her.

The leaders of the church have reportedly been placed under house arrest, however it seems that the two senior pastors have been taken away and it’s unclear where they are at the moment.

Do please be praying about this situation.

Pray for Bobby

Bobby’s the blogger who got me blogging.  Man of a thousand theoblogs – some of which he hasn’t deleted ;-) and three of which are linked in my sidebar (a record).

He goes into surgery tomorrow to remove a cancerous tumor (more details here).  Please pray they get the whole tumor, that minimal (ie no) damage would be done in removing it and that it will never return!  The surgeons are called Dr Kevin Billingsley and Dr Greg Moneta.  His wife’s called Angela please pray for her and the kids too at this time.

Go on, spend a minute now asking the Father to give this piece of bread to His precious children.

UPDATE:  Good news on Bobby’s surgery

ht Bobby

I really appreciate David speaking about the theology of the cross and how it teaches Christians not to simply flee to comfort but to fellowship with Christ in whatever suffering God brings.

David continues (sporadically) JollyBlogging.  Please keep him and Bobby in your prayers.

Here’s a website where you can write to Christians imprisoned for their faith.  They will tell you the background to different prisoners, translate your encouragements into the approapriate language and tell you where to send your letter.

Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow-prisoners, and those who are ill-treated as if you yourselves were suffering.  (Heb 13:3)

Prayer request

Hi guys,

Please pray for my wife.  She’s still in hospital and if she doesn’t respond to treatment in the next 36 hours the surgical options are pretty nasty.  Pray for wisdom too – not sure how to respond to the ‘drug her, drug her more, ok cut her’ approach…

Thanks,

Glen

UPDATE 25/02/09:

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for your prayers.  Emma’s slightly improved.  Enough anyway for the doctors to stop talking about immediate surgery.  So that’s really good.  But she hasn’t improved that much either.  And they don’t seem to have a great handle on what’s wrong or how they’ll fix it.  So it looks like more hospital for the forseeable and maybe surgery too if things don’t properly improve.

Thanks again for your prayers – we have both felt very upheld and very loved.  THANK YOU.

UPDATE 11/03/09:

Emma’s now out of hospital. The doctor’s don’t know what’s wrong but they’re now treating her as an outpatient for which we’re both very grateful.

From Baranabas Fund:

Hindu extremist violence against the Christian community in Orissa State, India, which started on 24 August (see previous articles : 12/09/2008, 01/09/2008), has continued almost unabated since then. At least 50 Christians have been murdered, some cut to pieces and others burnt alive. Many fear that the death toll is even higher, with one estimate suggesting that 120 Christians have been killed. About 18,000 people have been injured, many of them severely; numerous Christian women have been raped; some 4,400 homes have been destroyed; 300 villages have been cleansed of all Christians; and several orphanages and hundreds of churches and church buildings have been torched and razed. Relief camps, where Christians have fled for safety and shelter, have been attacked and drinking water has been poisoned.

Over 50,000 Christians are thought to be homeless, and around 30,000, more than half of them children, are hiding in the jungle, many without any food and water. Starvation is a very real danger for many of them, especially for the children, the elderly and the sick. Christians wanting to return to their homes have been told by the Hindu extremists: “Come back as Hindu or don’t come back at all.” Many who dare to return to their villages are forcibly converted to Hinduism. Sometimes the Hindu extremists pour petrol over the Christians and then ask them to convert; if they refuse they will be burnt.

UPDATE 15 October 2008: News from Barnabas Fund

UPDATE:  A letter from Orissa

UPDATE:  Go here for more news on the persecution of Indian Christians

UPDATE: The latest from Gospel for Asia

I got this by text on Thursday night:

“Please pray for Pastor Paul Thangaia (I think it’s spelt Paul Thangiah – Pastor of Bangalore’s largest church – 12 000 strong). RSS planned to kill him. They have already burnt 20 churches yesterday. They plan to destroy 200 churches in Orissa. BJP has also planned to kill him and 200 pastors in the next 24 hours.”

Gospel for Asia suggest the following prayer points for the situation in general.

  • Ask God to specially assign His angels to watch over and protect His people, evangelists, pastors and church leaders in these areas
  • Pray that police and government officials will bring the violence under control immediately.
  • Pray that God will strengthen the church with courage, boldness, strong conviction and faith in the Lord to stand firm for His name during these days.
  • Pray that the enemies of the Gospel will be visited by the love of the living and true God and that a great number of them will turn to Him.
  • Pray for the suffering Christians to receive justice and favor in this hour of crisis.
  • KP Yohanan recorded this three days ago:

If anyone knows more, please do comment with links.  And let’s pray.
