A friend of mine was counselling a woman who’d been cheating on her husband. She ended the affair and resolved never to tell her husband about any of it. She said “If I told him it would put a bomb under our marriage.”
What would you reply?
My friend’s answer was inspired:
“The bomb has already gone off. [...]

Codepoke is worried about our ever-expanding information/entertainment culture and its effects on face to face relations. Here is yet more evidence of this worrying trend.
Just what is a “marriage” anyway?

Gonna mess you up

There are two things that will really mess you up in life. Getting married and becoming a Christian. You can poodle along quite contentedly before either of these states. But once you enter marriage, or once Christ enters you – life as you know it is over.
I know a good number of people who have [...]

He said: Yeah, it’s that whole theme of… isn’t it interesting how Paul says…

Here’s a sermon on 1 Corinthians 7.
Basically I think the chapter’s about contentment. Marriage and singleness etc are a presenting issue (v1). But really Paul’s telling us to stay put in our circumstances.
And to do it we need to remember calling, timing and gifting.
God’s call (v15, 17, 18, 20, 22) is His call to fellowship [...]

Cheek Turning 101

Turning the other cheek is the very nature of Jesus’ posture towards us. It defines His way. This is true in the OT as much as the New.
It is a response to being wronged. (Note that being sued and forced labour are the parallel cases in Matt 5:40,41 – it’s not just about non-violence, it’s [...]
Love is the greatest thing… or is it?

Ok, another little example of engaging with non-Christian world-views. This is from a wedding sermon I gave a few weeks ago. The great majority of the congregation were not Christians. The couple asked me to speak from 1 John 4:7-12. I’ll quote a part of the sermon and then make some comments. (Just so you know [...]
