I think it is to use His name for a ungodly purpose. To use it in a way that does not honor Him or glorify Him.
To throw God’s name around like so much cheap confetti.
Yes, I agree with theoldadam. Paul spoke about this in his letters to Timothy, when he warned of those “having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof”, and “supposing that gain is godliness”. Essentially, hypocrisy.
I have long wondered whether taking the Lord’s name is what happens when we become Christians. E.g. we take Jesus’s name in baptism. So taking his name in vain would be like getting baptised but never actually living for Christ. Or calling yourself an Israelite but worshipping Baal.
Is this what “taking” means? Because most people think it’s about swearing or blasphemy i.e. why Jews don’t use the name YHWH.
